Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park
CA
July 2014
The road just to get to the beach was an exciting drive through deep forest on a narrow, winding dirt road. We even drove past a few Roosevelt Elk along the drive. It was a little scary to find out that we would be camping in a tsunami zone. The rangers assured us that there is usually enough time to evacuate the campground before a tsunami hits.
We found a little piece of heaven on earth at Gold Bluffs Beach Campground in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. The campsites are available on a first come basis and fill to capacity everyday. We arrived too late on our first attempt, but knew we really wanted to camp on this beach. We arrived early the next day and had our choice of a few sites. We picked the site closest to the Pacific Ocean. The rest of the available sites were taken before we had out tent set-up.
Views from our campsite (notice the bear box for our food):
Despite the 59F temperature with a steady breeze, Laurel was ready to check out the beach as soon as our tent was secured. Kellisa just wanted to listen to her music, I think she knew it was a little too cold to get wet.
I looked back to see that Kellisa tipped backwards from dancing a little too hard...and she loved every second of it!
A classic camping dinner:
We had a cold and windy night ahead of us:
I would guess it was only in the 40s, but Laurel still wanted to go to the beach the next morning:
Kellisa wanted to get her wheels wet this time:
