Fort Gates Ferry

The girls love taking alternative forms of transportation, so it was a no brainer to follow a small sign 7 off road miles through the Ocala National Forest on the Florida Black Bear Scenic Byway. The sign simply said, "FERRY".  The girls love bumpy roads (even though Laurel claimed to be "allergic" so we could go to the movies instead) and they were excited to look for bears. Unfortunately, we didn't see any. The dirt road ended at a dock and a sign said to pull to the edge and leave your headlights on. We did and waited about 15 minutes for the small, old ferry (it's the oldest operating ferry in Florida, dating back to the 1850's and was used in the Civil War) to cross to our side to drop off a load and pick us up.
 
 
Both girls were eager to get out and enjoy the 10 minute, mile long crossing of the St. Johns River under a blazing sun:
